There are two separate species of vanilla orchid: Planifolia and Tahitensis.

The Tahitensis, on the other hand, is considered to be much sweeter and mild than the cousin it is a mutation of. It is primarily grown in Papua New Guinea, despite the fact that it was originally produced in Tahiti. Though, they can be found from other regions as well.

Consider the quality of the vanilla bean.

When perusing the many vanilla beans online, you’ll notice that some are considered ‘Grade A’ vanilla beans while others are considered ‘Grade B’ vanilla beans. The difference is in the moisture level.

Because the beans have a lower moisture content, the vanilla flavor is more concentrated. If you are making an extract or can steep the beans in liquid prior to completing your recipe, Grade B vanilla beans will work perfectly. Grade B vanilla beans are also much cheaper because they are far lighter than the gourmet version.

Hi Richard, thanks for your question. We find the best method for making vanilla extract is simply to follow FDA standards for pure vanilla extract. This standard is based on simple with and volume proportions of .83 ounce of vanilla beans to every 8 ounce of solvent (vodka, rum, brandy, etc) This equates to roughly 10 of the extract grade vanilla beans when purchasing by the each. We personally suggest purchasing vanilla beans by weight to ensure appropriate amounts and strength of vanilla extract but understand the need by some users to purchase by the each so this option is available. Vanilla beans can be spilt and scrapped before placing into your alcohol however we kindly encouraging the chopping of vanilla beans into .25-.5 in pieces and then adding to liquid. I am interested in making my own vanilla extract. I sounds like I need grade b beans, what variety do you recommend? I understand I need to place about 10 beans in a small bottle of vodka and about 15 in a large bottle of vodka, is that correct? And it needs to set for about 6 months. Can I leave the beans in the vodka longer or is there a limit on how long I need to leave the beans in the vodka? Do I split the bean pods or leave them whole! Do you have a supplier that you could recommend? Thank you so much.
