Homemade Vanilla Scented Candles

How to make vanilla candles at home

A homemade candle is a unique gift that will surely be much appreciated – and easier than you’d think to make! Even better? You can customize the scent and use ingredients right from your kitchen to complement – rather than overwhelm – the room.

We love the warm cozy smell of fresh vanilla, and it’s the perfect addition to a homemade candle. Simply add a generous amount of vanilla powder to the melted wax, pour into your vessel of choice and let cool. The vanilla powder creates lovely “speckles” to the wax, and a fresh vanilla bean tied on lets the recipient know what’s inside!

To Make Homemade Vanilla Candles you will need the following:

Your vessel(s) of choice – mason jars, mugs, vases, even cleaned, repurposed candle holders all work
Candle wicks
Unscented soy wax flakes (see recipe to calculate how much you’ll need)

Vanilla bean powder (see recipe to calculate how much you’ll need)

Directions for making your vanilla candles

  1. Set your wick in the center of your vessel. Some wicks come with a self-sticking metal base that you can adhere to the bottom. If you are using a spool of wick, cut a generous amount so that you have enough to wind it around a chopstick or pencil, which you’ll lay across the top of your vessel to stabilize when you pour the melted wax in.
  2. Calculate the amount of soy wax flakes you’ll need as follows: Fill your vessel(s) with water and pour the water into a measuring cup. Then, double the amount of water to estimate the amount of wax flakes you’ll need (for example, for 2 cups of water you’ll need 4 cups of wax flakes).
  3. Using a pot large enough to hold your measuring cup or pot of wax flakes comfortably, fill with water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and place your cup or pot inside. Stir occasionally, until the wax flakes start to melt, then more frequently until the flakes are completely melted. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  4. For every cup of wax flakes add 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla powder. Stir well to incorporate and slowly pour into your prepared vessel(s). Let cool for 24 hours and trim the wick prior to lighting.
