How To Make Bread for Focaccia Art

Foccacia art is definitely a trend we can get on board with. It is not only gorgeous, allowing the chef to unleash their inner artist, but the art itself is embellishing one of the softest, most versatile breads there is.

We’ve been seeing this trend a lot and have been so thoroughly impressed by the creations that we thought we would try our hands at a little focaccia art of our own. We thought our whole cloves would work perfectly as the whispy seeds of a dandelion and I think we were right!

This recipe for easy focaccia will enable you to play with your food, find more beauty in ingredients, get creative, and express yourself! Don’t be afraid to check out our list of incredible spices for a little inspiration.

How to make focaccia bread to use as a culinary canvas

Serves: 2

Prep Time: 15’

Cooking Time: 20’

Additional Time: ’

Ingredients

For the bread:

  • 7 grams dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup olive oil

For the toppings:

Method

  1. Bring all the ingredients to a mixing bowl and knead the dough for 10-15 minutes or until smooth and elastic; the dough is on the sticky side so it is best to use a dough hook to knead.
  2. Cover and allow to double in size, for around 30-45 min.
  3. Grease a rectangular baking pan really well with olive oil and bring the dough in; stretch it to the corners of the pan, cover, and allow to proof for another 30 min.
  4. Preheat oven to 180C/356F with the fan on.
  5. Add 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil and gently poke the dough.
  6. Bring out the cloves, parsley, or anything else you want to decorate with and begin your artistic endeavor.
  7. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt, drizzle some more olive oil on top and bake at 180 C/356F, fan on for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Once out of the oven, add the remaining olive oil and allow to soak in; serve as it is or as a side to any meal. But don't forget to take a picture first (and tag @slofoodgroup on Instagram so we can check out your creation).

Spiced Potato Pancakes (Latkes)

These spiced Latkes with wild garlic dip are a delicious variation on the German potato pancake. Spiced with cloves and nutmeg, they play well with the smooth, earthy elements of the potatoes. Though typically served with applesauce, we love them with this creamy greek yogurt and wild garlic dip.
